Leading with Your Head and Your Heart may be one of the most heartfelt and practical guides on how any leadership team can build an organizational culture that truly yields extraordinary results. Writing this book was a labor of love because it gave the authors and the thousands of employees who were part of this story the opportunity to look back on a journey that changed them all forever.
This book is not theoretical. It tells the story of a company that aspired to greatness and was willing to put in the work to make it happen. It tells you not just what they did, but walks you through, step by step, just how they did it. It introduces you to the many experts they tapped into along the way, and the extraordinary partnership they established with the company that helped them build and transfer the skills to sustain it on their own. It openly shares the missteps they encountered along the way and uses real metrics to measure progress and articulate success. Perhaps most importantly, though, it illustrates the power of an engaged workforce.
Many of us grow up learning to manage our companies and our people. To” manage” means “to control”. This book shares the leap of faith required for HMS’s executive team to let go of that control and empower their workforce to set aggressive goals and find innovative means for achieving them. It teaches you that leaders exist at all levels of the organization if only you look for them. Finally, it proves, once and for all, that an engaged, empowered workforce will choose to work harder than you would ever ask of them—and they will have fun doing it!
